What Is QUIC?

Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC) is a Google-developed, speed enhanced alternative to the transmission control protocol (TCP).

QUIC vs TCP?

TCP is the set of rules that controls how data is delivered via the internet or other network, ultimately setting up the connection among computers who are sending and receiving data. The internet was built with TCP due largely to its ability to create reliable connections.

However, where TCP struggles is when it has to make multiple trips back and forth (at least 2-3 connections are generally required) among the communicating computers in its effort to create a secure connection to display a website to the visitor. This secure connection involves the computers communicating via TCP as well as using Transport Layer Security (TLS) to create a safe HTTPS connection for security purposes.

Each of the round trip connections that is required to create this secure connection and to display the site increases latency, ultimately impacting how fast a web page loads and performs. In this instance, the website does not load or perform as well as it could.

Why QUIC is Better?

QUIC improves upon TCP largely through a multiplexed connection. QUIC creates a set of multiple connections combined into one between the two communicating computers. This connection provides TLS equivalent security for a safe connection. More importantly however, QUIC is able to reduce the need to make multiple trips in order for the two communicating computers to make their connection. Thanks to this multiplexed connection and reduced number of round trips, QUIC ultimately lowers latency and improves your site's load speed.

QUIC Advantages

  • Experience a large reduction in the amount of time it takes for communicating computers to create their connections
  • Both reduces the amount of bottlenecks and it more efficient in how to handle them
  • Migration connections
  • Multiplexes while not blocking first in line connections
  • Corrections in forward errors

Real Life TCP vs QUIC Example

Let's say you run a recipe website. Your recipe website is hosted on a server. When your visitors type your URL into their browser bar in order to visit your website, something called a "TCP handshake" is required. This is essentially to create a connection between their computer and the server where your site is hosted. This sounds rather simple.

The complexity, and the part that can slow down the performance of your site, is that the connection has to be secure To create this secure connection, your visitor's computer and your website's server need to send information back and forth a number of times. Each of these connections adds loading time to your website. This may seem negligible, but it can add up quickly. For example, let's say there are 5 connections made between the server and computer. Let's also say that each of these connections take an average of 100 milliseconds to make. That's an extra 500 milliseconds, or a half second of additional page load time. Keep in mind that this is just to create connection. Not a single piece of data from your website has been sent to your visitor yet!

Wouldn't it be better if there was a vastly reduced number of connections made between the computer and the server? That's the whole goal of QUIC. QUIC essentially wants to reduce the amount of trips between your visitor's computer to your website's server to just 1. This is especially true for sites that sites that have already been visited before where the computer and the server are already familiar with each other.
